Molecular formula: NaHS

Product nature: brown-yellow flakes or solid. Easily soluble in water and ethanol; when dissolved in water it provides a strong alkaline solution.

Application: Sodium hydrosulfide is one of the most important chemicals in dyeing and printing industries. It is considered a very strong reducing agent; effective on many dyes especially vat dyes; and converts them into soluble form. This reducer is used to remove some dyes from fabrics and soaps. One major issue of this compound was its instability but later this problem was solved and storage became possible. In the dyeing industry this material is called “Hydro”. Currently in pulp and paper industry sodium hydrosulfide is used instead of zinc to comply with regulations regarding non-use of zinc. In soil related industries it is used to remove iron red color from soil; and in the production of electric paper and porcelain. This compound is used in large quantities in dyeing denim fabric with indigo dye.
